Meet the Brewery: Birdfish Brewing Company

I'm not going to lie I had never even heard of Columbiana until Birdfish Brewing Company reached out to me.  This brewery is great. They've made more than one new beer a week since they opened! My current favorite from these guys is the Dancing Hen Mushroom Porter. Make sure to get your ticket to the Akron Ale Fest in order to get to check out breweries like his first hand!

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

Jared Channell, and I am one of three owners/brewers.

What is the name of your brewery and how did it come about?

We call ourselves Birdfish Brewing Company. We started brewing in my garage back in 2010 and once our first batch came out actually “drinkable”, we became addicted to the art of brewing and started buying anything we found that would make our beer better.  The name was simply something that had a nice ring to it, and with the only two sports teams having a penguin as their mascot, we thought, what is a penguin…
A bird or a fish??

What is your favorite beer that's been released at your brewery?

That’s a tough question but I would have to say it would be a beer that we call The Ganesh. It’s a 7% IPA with Fresh Mangos to add a little sweetness, Black Peppercorn that adds a little depth and complexity to the beer to go along with the fruity and citrus hop profile.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

The one thing in our brewery that sticks out to me that not a lot of people even really notice is an old wooden beer crate that is stamped with “The Geo J. Renner Brewing Co.”. It was handed down to us from our great grandfather who was the branch manager of the brewery in Youngstown back in the 1940’s. It has a lot of meaning to us and good to know that operating a brewery is part of our family history and future.

What is your most recent milestone?

To me, I would say finally getting our doors open to the public. We have been brewing for a number of years and it has been a lot of work starting a new business from scratch. With that being said, we are pretty happy where we stand at this point.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

Being that we are currently operating on a 1 BBL system, I would say that our next major goal would be to upgrade our system and capacity so that we can make more beer and open up more days.

Bear vs. Shark who would win and why?

Bear. Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica.

Drink of choice? (this doesn't have to be one of your beers but it can be)

Bodhi from Columbus Brewing Company. I am a big fan of their IPA as well but their double IPA tops all in my books!
