Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: McArthur's Brewhouse

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

We are Kevin and Abbey McArthur.  We both own and operate McArthur's Brew House.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

We wanted something simple.  We really liked the idea of using the initials MBH in our logo.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

Our favorite seasonal beer has to be the Blueberry Wheat Ale served with fresh blueberries.  We have received great feedback on the Blueberry Wheat Ale.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

The first thing that people notice when they walk into our brewery is the pallet wall.  It took a lot of patience and we went through many pallets.  We are very happy with how it turned out.

What is your most recent milestone?

Our most recent milestone was getting the patio approved.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

We would like to sell food and wine in the near future.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Dragon of course!  It's a mythical creature.  How cool would it be to fly and shoot flames out of your mouth!

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: The Butcher & the Brewer

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

My name is John McGroarty and I'm in charge of brewing operations and all things BEER!

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

Seeing as we have a brewery and a butchershop within our building, we wanted to make sure that both facets were integrated - so the Hop Hog does a good job of showcasing both.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

We're getting ready to release our German Festbier and its a style I'm quite fond of, but aside from that our Barrel Talk Series is our line of mixed-culture saisons.  It would have to be one of those two, but its hard for me to choose favorites.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

Tough question, but Id have to say the lagering vessels we use as serving tanks.  The design allows for the beer to clear quickly and allows us to steer clear of finings and filters.

What is your most recent milestone?

Getting our barrel program running.  Coming from a production background, we always had excess space for barrels and racks running to the ceilings - at B&B, we're cramped for space and don't have the ability to stack more than 2 levels, so we lots of thought goes into where/why each barrel is where it is.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

We're working on our 3rd and 4th locations.  Hoping to have more news soon!

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

That's pretty easy.  Dragons can fly, spit fire, and have nearly-impermeable scales.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: Lockport Brewery

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

I'm Andrew and I'm the co-founder and brewer at Lockport Brewery.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

We worked with a friend, fresh out of the Columbus College of Art & Design, to put our logo together. We like simple design with bold contrasts so we stick to the basics on that.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

We're a little late in the season but we released a Kölsch recently and we think it's pretty good. Look for it at the Akron Ale Fest this weekend!

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

In our taproom, we have the "Record Wall." Aptly named, it a large wall with 5 rows of vinyl records, all available for play on our turntable. We have everything from David Bowie and Led Zeppelin to The Black Keys and Wu Tang Clan.

What is your most recent milestone?

Six months open! That may not seem like a big deal but at this time last year there were real doubts we'd ever see that day.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

With the installation of 50% more cellar capacity in a few weeks, we want to be able to branch out into some other beer styles, especially ones that need a little extra time in the tank to get just right...like lagers. Up until now, that hasn't been feasible with demand.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

I think the dragon is the clear winner here because, unlike lions and wolves, dragons can fly and breathe fire. Basic science, man.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Maker: Yurko Stitch Co

Who are you and what is your role at your business?

My name is Brad and I'm the maker of all products at Yurko Stitch Co. including leather wallets made from real baseball gloves and industrial pipe lamps & decor.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

Yurko was my name in college and I've grown up loving and playing baseball. The color red and stitch came from the red stitching in a baseball.

What is your favorite seasonal beer?

Honestly I don't really like beer but what I would drink is an Angry Orchard lol.

What is your favorite tool you use to create your goods?

Simple my razor blade. Taking apart baseball gloves is very therapeutic for me.

What is your most recent milestone?

I purchased a "Clicker" so I can cut out my leather pieces easier and faster instead of doing everything by hand.

What is your next major goal for your business?

I would love to get my Baseball glove leather goods into as many minor league baseball stadiums as possible.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Lion for the only reason is that I like them the best.

Jesse Dolar; Head Brewer.

Ross Horvath was kind enough to draw up a logo for us.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

I have really enjoyed our Orange Mango Citra Shandy during the hot summer days.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

On the bar side would be our crowler machine. One of our bartenders kept encouraging Ron and myself to look into getting a crowler machine until we finally did and it has been a huge success! We are constantly filling crowlers for customers!

What is your most recent milestone?

We now have a kitchen and will be opening for Lunch!

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

We are working on opening up a Production Facility and possible canning line.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

A dragon would win if they were real. I mean come on! armored skin, fire breathing capabilities, flight?! Its a no brainer. However, they are fictitious.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: Ohio Brewing Co

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

I’m Chris Verich and I’m Owner of Ohio Brewing Company.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

It was a joint idea between myself and our graphic artist. He presented a couple of drafts and I really liked the one we are using today.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

That’s a tough question, but probably the Four Monkeys ESB, which was released in early spring. It was a collaboration between homebrewers from SAAZ Homebrewers group and our Head Brewer Matt Coffey. It was a style we had never done before and it turned out excellent and sold out very quickly at the pub.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

Another tough question. Well there are so many things, from my personal brewery memorabilia collection that’s featured throughout the pub to our urinals made out of beer kegs (really!) to our wonderful staff. If I had to say one thing that’s sentimental probably our plate and frame filter machine as it’s the only piece of brewing equipment that is still being used from our original brewery in 1997!

What is your most recent milestone?

Ohio Brewing Company celebrated the 20th Anniversary of its founding on July 1st.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

To expand the brewery’s production and distribution and start canning our products.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Probably a wolf since they are smart and able to take care of business and they melt into the distance after taking care of business. They are stealthy and smart.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Crafter: Mrs Miller Time

Who are you and what is your role at your business?

I'm Beth and I do everything =)

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

Alas, my logo could use some work and is ever changing.  The current iteration pulls from the items I etch.

What is your favorite seasonal beer?

If all the beer isn't an acceptable answer then it would have to be all the new ways people are using blood orange.  IPA, Wheat and Gose, Oh My!  I know it's a passing fad but I've long been a fan of grapefruit in beer and this citrus is no exception!

What is your favorite tool you use to create your goods?

By far the blasting cabinet.  There is something viscerally satisfying about removing material to expose the design that was in your head.

glasses.jpg

What is your most recent milestone?

I created a new line of baby-centric wares.  It's really satisfying to create treasures for people.  It's really cool to think this is going to hang on someones wall and they are going to look at it and (hopefully) get all sentimental.  I mean it could become an heirloom, I have my birth info that someone made for my mother on my wall.  Is that a bit egocentric? =)

What is your next major goal for your business?

Fixing my website!  I've been neglecting it and it's getting a little mad at me...

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Dragon!  Because in hypothetical fights all mythical creatures win.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: HiHO Brewing

Our love of Ohio! With the state and the hop cardinal (state bird).

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

The New England IPA - its super dank and citrusy , perfect for summer!

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

Ohh that's tough to say, but my first thought is the 40' bar! The top is concrete and was poured by our friend Eric and my father in law and i built the base. The front of the bar is covered with my parents old fence wood from my childhood home, and my dad built the foot rail!

What is your most recent milestone?

We just received 3 new 15 BBL fermenters and our 15BBL brite tank! Now we can triple our production!

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

Select distribution to local bars/ restaurants.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Dragon hands down. They can fly and shoot fire.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Crafter: Champaign Paper

Who are you and what is your role at your business?

Elisabeth & Shaun Mueller.  We co-own, design, and make all of our stationery products.

Elisabeth just started sketching different designs.  We love nature and the outdoors, so the trees and mountains seemed like a natural fit for us.

What is your favorite seasonal beer?

Shaun - Probably Bell's Winter Ale.

What is your favorite tool you use to create your goods?

Elisabeth - Micron Pens!

What is your most recent milestone?

This year we were picked up by our 60th retail shop.  We are now in over 60 stores across 18 states and Canada.

What is your next major goal for your business?

We plan to expand our product line and increase our retail footprint, especially on the West Coast.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

We think the wolf and the dragon are going to team up to destroy the lion.

Akron Ale Fest Featured DJ: DJ El Prezidente

Who are you and how did you come up with your DJ name?

I am DJ El Prezidente my name was given to me back when I and some friends put together a hip hop record label and it has stuck with me since then.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

The idea for my logo came from N.E Ohio graffiti legend John Skyline Davison. He designed it incorporating music via the turntable and record as well as royalty depicted in the usage of a crown.

What is your favorite seasonal beer?

I don't know if you want to print this but I don't drink.

What is your favorite piece of equipment in your setup?

My favorite piece or should I say pieces would be the records I collect interesting enough I have never counted them or put them in alphabetical order.

What is your most recent milestone?

My most recent milestone would be the 4 year anniversary of the Mighty Soul Night which is actually this month (August).

What is your next major goal for your business?

My next major goal will be to secure a opportunity that will allow for me to be able to book musical groups as well as touring DJs. I know a lot of pretty good funk/soul bands with music out most of which have never played in NE Ohio. I would also lime to be able to present music based documentaries.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Well since I am a Leo I would have to say...Lion!

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: Wadsworth Brewing Company

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

Ernie Joy,  brewer/owner and my favorite role is when I have time to bartend and interact with customers.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

I have always liked clean/simple lines and we are located in a historic downtown so we wanted to have something clean that also met guidelines within our Historic Main Street Wadsworth designation.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

The Apple Pie a la malt.  I think when you try something new and fun with flavor it is always a risk, but this one landed quite well with customers and it has been fun to watch it take off with them.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

My bar front, high top tables, bar top, and flight boxes are constructed from gym flooring that myself, my wife, and our son tore out of a school in Wadsworth that was built in the early 1900s.  We took two days crouched over with crowbars tearing it out board by board.  It was a labor of love, blood, sweat, and swearing, but it looks gorgeous.

What is your most recent milestone?

We hit our six month anniversary, added two more fermenters to keep up with demand, and opened a small food offering, so I guess that's three.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

We are working with our city and council to hopefully add a back patio late this summer or early next.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Dragon- they can fly and breathe fire.  To me, success in anything you do in this world takes imagination, a spark that leads to a flame and you have to believe you can soar.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Crafter: Wood Ohio

Who are you and what is your role at your business?
Eric Unangst, Owner.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

We wanted a simple logo to incorporate our company name and display our Ohio roots.

What is your favorite seasonal beer?

We’re big fans of milk stout and drink it regardless of the season.

What is your favorite tool you use to create your goods?

We use dozens of tools to create our signs, but perhaps our favorite is our Laguna cyclone vacuum.  This large dust collector helps filters particles as small as 1 micron and keeps the air in our shop safe to breathe.  And we like breathing.

What is your most recent milestone?

We’ve sold more than 500 signs on Etsy.  Yeah!

What is your next major goal for your business?

We are working to build up our inventory of items available on Amazon.  (A small Seattle company we’re using to sell on the internet.)

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Lion, hand’s down.  They scare the hell out of us.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: Magic City Brewing Company

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

I'm Jay Graham, owner, brewer and dude at MCBC.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

It was kind of a joke that turned out right. I'm a big dude, covered in tattoos that listens to death metal... and I couldn't think of a better way to express my business with a bunny. Thankfully my dear friend Brian understood this when I told him I wanted a bunny for the logo.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

We just opened so all of them!

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

This is a loaded question, with an even longer answer. In short, it is a memorial for my dear father in law who passed this year. He was very proud of this endeavor, and so looked forward to seeing what groovy beers we'd crank out etc. but the memorial has one of his old, unwashed bandannas hanging from it. So ya, that would be it.

What is your most recent milestone?

Opening. Easiest question yet.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

Upgrading our system, expanding, world domination and potentially space travel.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

All die a slow miserable death. The lion dies first based solely upon the fact that it's a "cat" and cats suck (were Great Dane owners, deal with this shitty opinion). BUT it sinks its jaws into the dragons throat, mortally wounding it before passing. The wolf dies in a fiery hell produced from the suffering and pure agony of the dragon.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Crafter: The Robot Consortium

Who are you and what is your role at your business?

Pat Gerber, The Robot Consortium

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

A customer that became a friend designed it for me as a surprise.

What is your favorite seasonal beer?

12 dogs of Christmas Ale from Thirsty Dog Brewery.

What is your favorite tool you use to create your goods?

Has to be my Delta Unisaw with the Biesemeyer Fence.

What is your most recent milestone?

I went full time a year ago, this had been a major goal of mine since I started making stuff.

What is your next major goal for your business?

Next up would be building a new shop in my backyard and expanding my workspace.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Lion for the win because dragons don't exist and they are bigger, stronger and faster than wolves. Unless the wolves are in a pack then wolves for the win.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: Aqueduct Brewing

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

Sara Hernandez-owner, bartender, social media manager & Robert Hernandez-operator/brewer, bar manager.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

Our logo was inspired by the ancient aqueducts of Rome. We are big fans of history (Sara has a B.A. in history). Robert submitted an initial idea to a graphic design student at Ohio State University who helped us design the logo as his final project.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

We are really proud of our Selu Apple Lemon Shandy.  Robert had never made a shandy before this year, so we weren't sure how it would turn out.  Our first 5 gallon keg sold out in less than a week.  He's getting ready to brew his fourth batch in less than a month so that we can hopefully have it on tap for the rest of the summer.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

Our favorite part of he brewery is the history that surrounds it. The brewery sits in one of the original Burkhardt Brewing Company buildings. The original brickwork gives customers a snapshot of this history, while also providing a comfortable feel to the brewery.  The Burkhardt Brewing Company encapsulated Wolf Creek within the building to use for brewing, which you can still see flowing through the building today.

What is your most recent milestone?

We are currently going through another small expansion. We are adding more taps and upgrading our fermentation, carbonation and kegging equipment.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

We never set major goals for the brewery on any kind of timeline.  Our goal has always been to slowly grow the brewery, but only to a certain point. We will eventually upgrade to a 5 barrel brew system and that is as big as we want to get.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Dragon would win because he can breathe fire, fly, and has wicked talons.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Crafter: The Bom

Who are you and what is your role at your business?

I'm an Art Teacher, by profession, & the founder of 'The Bom Parties'.

Wolf, they travel in packs.

Akron Ale Fest Featured Brewery: Mucky Duck Brewing Co

Who are you and what is your role at the brewery?

My name is Joe Wathey, and my wife, Erica, and I own the Mucky Duck Brewery.

Where did the idea for your logo come from?

The duck is the unofficial mascot of the Portage Lakes, where we are located.  We have had a lot of fun dressing up the duck on the labels for all our different brews.

What is your favorite seasonal beer that's been released at your brewery lately?

Our Christmas Ale, Nauti or Nice, is amazing.  It's been a big hit locally, and was offered in 40 different bars and restaurants for Christmas in July this year.

What is your favorite thing in your brewery?

I love the old Sinclair gas pump in the picture below.  I'm a gear-head, and all of my prior careers were in the automotive industry.  Three years into the brewery business and long after buying this pump, I sold my automotive tools business to a company out of St. Louis called Husky.  Husky was originally known for its fuel pump handles, and this old gas pump coincidentally has a Husky handle.

What is your most recent milestone?

We recently rented an additional 3,500 square foot space.

What is your next major goal for the brewery?

Moving into a 20 barrel system and expanding into our new space.

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

A dragon breathes fire and flies.  Is there any contest?

Lion, wolf, or dragon who will win and why?

Me, I've fought a lion, and wolf, and destroyed them…. Dragons aren’t real, so….. the answer is me.
